The Public library „Grad“ is a modern public library which, along with its primary book-lending function, serves as a cultural and information centre of the local community. It operates in the central branch – Old town, and smaller branches in Cavtat and Trpanj (outside of Dubrovnik) and also Gruž, Lapad, Mokošica, Montovjerna (different parts of Dubrovnik). The public library is also home to County Research and Development Department responsible for all the public and school libraries in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Collecting, cataloguing and storing various library materials enable the patrons to use around a 130000 units of library materials, as well as services such as free internet access and online data bases. The collections include Local collection, audio-visual collection, electronic publications, newspapers and magazines. The Public library membership card also allows patrons to use the holdings and services of the Research library – the two combined make a single institution Dubrovnik libraries – and order inter-library loans from Croatian and foreign libraries.
The services of the public library are organized through following departments: Department of catalogization and classification is in charge of cataloguing and processing books, CIP catalogization and supervising the online catalogue; the central Acquisition department is responsible for all acquisitions (financed equally by the City of Dubrovnik and the Ministry of Culture); the Lending department has an open-access area, periodicals reading room, study reading room which also holds local, reference and general collections. Another important department is Children and youth section, and there is also a Multi-media section.
